China’s Shadow Over Bangladesh: Is Yunus the Next Victim of the Dragon’s Curse?

In Bangladesh, a visit to China is becoming a sign of losing power for the leaders. Khaleda Zia in 2005 and Sheikh Hasina in 2024 are big examples of this. Both went to China and made a deal but lost power within a few months after returning.

Muhammad Yunus in china

International News: It is said that studying history is very important. However, Yunus, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, could not understand this. Actually, Yunus had gone to China just a month ago. He had also spoken big things there. His tone against India was so loud, as if Yunus himself was the Alexander of the world. However, if he had read a little of his country's history instead of speaking against India, then perhaps Yunus's condition in Bangladesh would have been better.

The head of the interim government, Yunus, probably did not know that a mysterious coincidence has always been in the news in Bangladesh politics. Any big leader who visits China loses power within a few months. This is not a superstition but is becoming a reality related to recent events. Consider that the countdown for the rulers of Bangladesh begins when they cross the threshold of China. Let us know who has lost power by going to China's Jinping and when.

Khaleda Zia's visit to China and departure from power

In 2005, the then Prime Minister Khaleda Zia went to China on a strategic tour. She signed several agreements there for cooperation in infrastructure, defense, and trade. It was believed that she wanted to balance India's influence by building close relations with China. But after returning, protests increased in the country, the opposition movement intensified, and she had to leave power in 2006. China's economic intervention and allegations of alleged corruption against him severely shook his political grip. Then what? In the year 2006 itself, Khaleda had to leave the throne of power.

Sheikh Hasina's journey and end of power

In 2024, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited China, where she finalized investment in several projects under Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). India expressed dissatisfaction over the huge loans, political conditions, and some military assistance from China. The Hasina government in Bangladesh was accused of being under Chinese influence. At the end of this year, opposition forces got organized, there were large-scale protests, and ultimately she had to step down from power. Although there is no doubt that she did not go against India, yes, the influence of China in the country started becoming a burden for her.

Is Yunus's politics in danger now?

Recently, Bangladesh's interim government chief Mohammad Yunus visited China. He met Chinese leaders in Beijing and talked about cooperation on poverty alleviation schemes and social entrepreneurship. However, his statements during the visit led to controversy over criticism of India's policies. Yunus' critics have now become active over his anti-India stance and increasing dependence on China. Political analysts say that if Yunus steps towards power, he too may have to face the same dragon syndrome. This syndrome is that if the ruler of Bangladesh goes to China, he will lose power here.

Dragon diplomacy or political trap?

Experts believe that through its diplomacy, China brings smaller countries under its influence in the name of investment and development. But this also deepens political instability and internal divisions. Bangladesh is the latest example of this. Every time, the attempt to go with China by angering India has proved costly for the politics there. Questions have been raised earlier also on China's interference in India's neighboring countries, but countries like Bangladesh seem to bear the direct brunt of this.

On one hand, China is pushing its agenda; on the other, the people in Bangladesh have started considering it as external interference. Whenever a leader tries to deal with China, he has to face political instability, protests, and ouster from power. Now it remains to be seen whether Mohammad Yunus will be able to escape this cycle or another name will be added to the list of this strange coincidence.
